Mukawir

On one of our side trips we visited Mukawir, location of Herods castle where John the Baptist was beheaded. It was an amazing site, I'm told that it looks like a mini-Masada. We found the place completely empty and we enjoyed the steep hike to the top, overlooking the Dead Sea and Israel on the other side. The really cool part was that there were caves everywhere, it would have been so neat to do some excavations there. I imagine that it looked just like Qumran (directly across the Sea) where the Dead Sea Scrolls were accidentally found by a shepard boy.
